What is therapy like? What should I expect?

Great question! The length of therapy is different for everyone- from six weeks to six months to one year. Depending on your situation, therapy can be relatively brief or a longer term. Typically a client is seen once a week for about 45-50 minutes. Your first session which is your intake session will be different from future appointment. The initial appointment is more of “getting to know one another” session. The therapist will ask questions, and you may do the same. This time will help your therapist get an idea of how to proceed with your treatment needs; identifying your goals and establishing a treatment plan. We are mindful of each person’s individuality, uniqueness, culture, religious preferences/considerations, values and beliefs.

Your therapist will be conscientious about your treatment needs as he/she actively and attentively listen, provided appropriate feedback and support, guide you in goals setting, demonstrate professionalism and follow ethical guidelines as governed by their licensing board, and help you compose a treatment plan that adequately reflects your goals not theirs.

*Please note, some client’s prefer not to use their insurance. Most insurance companies will require a mental health diagnosis to be documented at time of first appointment in order for services to be covered.

Are our conversations private?

Successful therapy requires a level of trust between the client and therapist. Confidentiality is one of the components of that trusting client/therapist relationship. Clients are provided with a written copy of our confidential disclosure agreement. You can expect that what you discuss in any session will not be shared with anyone.

By law, therapist cannot release information without obtaining your written consent. State law and the ethics of our profession require that we maintain confidentiality except in the following situations:

  • If we are requested to disclose mental health information by a subpoena or court order.

  • If you threaten to harm yourself or someone else, and we perceive the threat to be valid or serious.

  • If you sign a “Release of Information” directing us to disclose information to someone else.

  • If you report information about the abuse of a child, an elderly person, a disabled and/or vulnerable individual who may require protection by law.

Do you offer medications?

A balance of Health and Wellness often comes from the integration of therapy and medication. It’s important to know that therapy treats more than the symptoms. In fact, therapy addresses the cause of distress and the maladaptive behaviors and works towards long-term solutions/outcomes. The sole use of medications may not be able to solve mental and emotional problems longterm. With that said, we strongly encourage you to work with your medical provider to determine the best options for you. We’re here to support you if you need assistance with a referral.

You may want to call your insurance to determine if you have mental or behavioral health coverage. Here are some helpful questions to ask:

  • Is approval required from my PCP (primary care physician)?

NO SURPRISES ACT

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.

Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act, health care providers and health care facilities are required to inform individuals who are not enrolled in a plan or coverage or a Federal health care program, or not seeking to file a claim with their plan or coverage both orally and in writing of their ability, upon request or at the time of scheduling health care items and services, to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of expected charges.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.  It is important to note that you may save money by choosing an in-network provider.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.  This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing before your medical service.  You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit No Surprises Act or call No Surprises Help Desk (800) 985-3059.
